The Fly

The fly was at it again. The small bug was everywhere. Of course I could just swat it away. Of course, the government didn’t recommend that. Of course, of course, of course. They know where I live. I know what I’m doing. They see everything. As my thoughts were broken again by the slow, insistent, lazy-

GODDAMN IT! Years and years of living this way, with the bug everywhere. I was thinking too hard, the bug would know. “The bug is for your own safety”

“The bug makes sure nothing happens”

“The bug is the reason our government still stands”

After all the terrorist attacks by the r3-17 cell, the government found the best way to make sure it never happened again. Instead of bugging the phone lines, or our phones like before, they put a goddamn bug in our houses. The small house fly would buzz around and make sure we weren’t plotting to overthrow the government. My bug’s eyes turned red. Goddamn it, I thought of the words ‘overthrow’ and ‘government’. The report fled out and my monitor beeped red. My tracker turned on and my VPN disabled automatically. The bug’s eyes turned solid blue again as it started buzzing around.

My threat was deemed unnecessary. The idiotic fly flew around my house again. What I wouldn’t do to feel its crushed camera in my hands. But I knew, the threat slowly made its way to my ears once again.

“Don’t swat away the small fly, we know where you are, if you have nothing to hide, keep our fly”

“It’s not really a fly. If you swat it away, we’ll just send two more.”

Of course there were protests, in the beginning. The complete and utter betrayal of our privacy, but it was all legal. All under the vicious Patriot Act, the GODDAMN ACT legalized our misery. Legalized our loss of humanity. LEGALIZED THE GOVERNMENT’S COMPLETE CONTROL.

“AHHHH!” I yelled as the bug shocked me, my thoughts were getting out of hand. The government was the best. We all should follow what the government says because it wants the best for us. We are all part of the government, and it wants what we want. The bug flies away. The bug flew away. Of course it did. Of course it did. Of COURSE IT DID. RUINING OUR LIVES. THE BUG FLIES AWAY. Oh, oh no, it’s coming near again. I put on a blank face and stared at it. A painted mask, a goddamn clown, that’s all I am, that’s all we are. I smile ruefully. The goddamn fly. It looks almost inquisitive. Will it shock me again? Will it ruin my mind. Corrupt the lake of self worth. Poison my thoughts and plant a seed of failure. Blooming into a flower of ruin. A suicide unnoticed. A thought broken. A tear falls out of the well in my eyes.

We are nothing, we are nothing, we are nothing. Of course, of course, of course. We are nothing. As the tears flow freely I start to laugh. Like all forms of protests crushed by our ALL SEEING, ALL KNOWING GOVERNMENT, I would too, become a martyr. I am nothing, yet my life, my breath, my death, of course that’s everything. I grabbed my flyswatter. Rubber, so as not to transfer the shock. I watch as the fly comes closer, edging me to attack. I knock the fucker out of the air. A knock on my door as two more flies enter my window through the service window. I swat at them over and over, the cameras in my hand. The flies come pouring in as I continue to swat, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256. I don’t even feel the shocks anymore as I swat more and more. Knocking death, fear, the government’s drones out of the air. Of course, of course, more come. Of course, of course, more shocks. The violent droning

Hits my ears harder than the cloud of electric flies in my small apartment. My suicide pointless, yet of all importance. 512, 1024. I am a god, I am the dirt, I am nothing but a wasteful demon. I am nothing, of course, the flies drop to the floor as my tears run down my face. Absolutely electric. I pick one of the broken camera bodies off the floor as the shock grows unbearable. I spasmodically clench my fist and laugh aloud. The camera crushed beneath my fingers. Of course, I die, of course I die. Of course. Of cou-
